In western Sri Lanka, three abandoned baby elephants were found within the span of a week, and are being cared for at the Ampara wildlife health unit.

The baby elephants are not weaned and so are being bottle-fed milk, and were treated for minor injuries that they were found with. One is seen finishing their drink and then settling in for a nap.

The calves are eight, five and three years old respectively and were found roaming the Kopawali area in Trincomalee, Maha Oya, east of Colombo.

Dr. Pushpakumara, a representative from the wildlife unit, said they would soon be sent to Eth Athuru Sevena, an elephant transit home at the Udawalawe National Park.

He also said that requests have been made to the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) to turn the Ampara wildlife health unit into an elephant conservation centre.
