A mother elephant charged at forest officials and villagers who were trying to rescue a baby elephant trapped in a well in Srilanka.

Footage captured on April 9 shows the adult elephant running towards a group of men as they flee in panic.

The animal can be seen confronting a digger involved in the rescue operation later on in the video.

Forest officials then drive the mother elephant away by shooting in the air, before digging earth to create a pathway for the calf to walk out of the well.

After a four-hour rescue operation, the calf manages to run out of the ditch and is later reunited with its mother.

A Baby elephant which had fallen into an agrarian well in the Kalagama area in Kekiraawa in srilanka was rescued by the wildlife officials.The elephant calf and its mother believed to have ventured into the area in search of food and water and the baby elephant accidentally had fallen into the unprotected agrarian well.Villagers and wild life officials have launched an rescue operation to save the baby elephant.when the rescuers tried to get closer to the well the mother elephant chased the officials and attacked them.Several attempts were made to chase the elephant away from the baby elephant and finally the rescue team pushed the elephant by bursting fire crackers.
The wild pachyderm struggled to keep its head above water as rescuers used a mechanical digger to excavate the well.Rescuers used an excavator to clear a path for the baby elephant to climb up. Earth was removed using the machine and a slanting pathway was created from the well so that the young elephant could walk out to freedom.After much struggling and spending about four hours in the small well, the calf walked through the pathway created by its rescuers.It took nearly five hours for the wild life officials and villagers to rescue the baby elephant from the well.The rescued baby reunites with his mother and moved in to the forest area.
