BRIDGEPORT, CT – At approximately 11:15 am on August 19, 2014, Bridgeport Fire Department units noticed heavy black smoke in the sky coming from the City’s east side. Soon after, a box was struck for heavy fire in the vacant Remington Arms Buildings at the corner of Helen and Barnum. Due to the fact that these buildings have been the scene of several previous fires, as well as decades of neglect, firefighters were not allowed to enter the 5-story buildings. The fire spread aggressively throughout the mill style heavy timber construction as it had many times before. The factory was purchased by Remington Arms in 1915 and produced weapons and munitions for American soldiers for well over a half of a century. The factory was closed in the 1980’s.
This ended up being the start of a very busy day for the Bridgeport Fire Department who would remain on scene throughout the night into the next day. As if the factory fire was not enough, fire units battled four more structure fires that day, two of which were at the same time as the main fire.
