Two protected and endangered White Rhinos grazing on dry grass

The Square-lipped or White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is the largest species of rhinoceros. Like other rhinoceros species the Square-lipped Rhino is threatened by poaching for its horn because of the totally wrong belief that rhino horn has therapeutic or aphrodisiac qualities. This is despite rhino horn being made from keratin, the same material as our fingernails. Other ineffective but criminal uses for rhino horn include its use as a party drug in Asia, where it is taken mixed with alcohol (“the drink of millionaires”) or snorted as snuff. Since 2008 there has been a surge in poaching, and these two Square-lipped Rhinos are now under 24-hour guard in a private wildlife reserve in Botswana. As you can see they are calm and trusting of humans, making them even more vulnerable to people of ill intent.
