Rare Sighting of a Black rhinoceros, a joyful morning in the African bush!

In the early morning, just as the sun was rising, a gray irregular shape moves by a small waterhole – a buffalo? – No, a rhino! Rhinos are rare and unfortunately their number decreases, but this was not the type of rhino mostly seen – this was a black rhino – one of the most elusive larger species roaming the African bush! Like a ghost it materialized and walked off! I’m sorry for the poor camera handling, but this was just such an unusual sighting and I was totally unprepared for it!One reason why the black rhino is so rarely seen is their eating behavior. The more common White rhino, with its wide mouth - square lipped - and low front constitution, is a grazer. As such they are more likely to be seen feeding out in the open grassland. The black rhino has a more pointed - hook-lipped – configuration, it’s a browser – it eats by nibble on leaves, tender twigs and shoots, or other soft vegetation. As such they mostly stay in the dense bush and thickets. Doe to narrowness and poor eyesight – most probably – they also are known to have a somewhat bad temper – grumpy, one might say – why it’s a great idea to stay away from thickets when on foot!
