Police have clashed with protesters in Thessaloniki during a demonstration against the agreement reached by Greece and Macedonia to resolve the name dispute.

The video shows police firing tear gas at protesters in an attempt to disperse them.

The riots broke out as Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras attended an international trade fair in the northern city.

According to reports, more than 16,000 people demonstrated in Thessaloniki against the government's controversial planned name deal with neighbouring Macedonia, which would see the former Yugoslav nation's name changed to the Republic of North Macedonia.

Unmatched size riots in Greece, tear gas billowed up from the streets of Thessaloniki on Saturday as police clashed with protesters rallying against Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras's visit to Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF).

Police attempted to disperse protesters with tear gas canisters, who responded with stones, flares and Molotov cocktails. Attacks on reporters and photojournalists by protesters and police where also reported. At least 8 people arrested and 28 prosecuted by police, 15 police officers injured.

The nationalist demonstration was called after the government reached a name deal with northern neighbours Macedonia. Under the agreement, the Balkan republic would be known as the Republic of North Macedonia, which bears a similar name to a region in Greece.
