Footage shows protesters running for cover as government security forces begin to fire tear gas on Francisco Fajardo Highway near La Carlota airbase.

Smoke and tear gas canisters litter the highway as protesters can be heard screaming in the background amid the sound of gunfire.

The filmer said: ''The Venezuelan National Guard threw bombs of tear gas that destroyed my camera and other devices.''

''Some of my friends were injured. Luckily, I could escape on time.''
