Three rhinos are murdered/slaughtered a day for their horn. The horn finds its way to the Far East, mainly China and Vietnam where it is used for various medicinal cures or as item to show off your wealth, daggers etc. The horn is made up of keratin, the same substance found in human hair and nails so their are no special properties whatsoever. The problem comes down to ignorance and a lack of information and education. The people in these countries pass down beliefs from previous generations. There is also a lack of accountability from the Chinese and Vitetnamese governments who do not do enough the illegal trade of rhino horn and elephant tusks. The South African government also needs to do more. There have been many allegations of corruption high up in government, particular ANC MP's have been accused of protecting poaching syndicates and benefitting financially from poaching. Judges and policeman/woman are also allegedly involved. Often case files are lost and the accused gets off scott free. There are two high profile cases at the moment, one in Kwazulu Natal and one in Hazyview. Both syndicate leaders have allegedly bribed local law enforcement and judges and will in all likelihood be free to carry on poaching.
