As Volunteers set out to monitor the local lion pride, they get a call from a neighbouring farm – poachers have shot and wounded two rhinos!
Diverting in to a new mission – the team of volunteers rush to assist in locating and handle the wounded rhinos after being sedated (darted) by the wildlife vet. Time is of essence, to secure ventilation and to help in maintaining its body temperature!
It became evident the poachers had failed to kill any of the rhinos – this time – but the rhinos had been wounded by the poachers’ bullets!
It was unfortunately not possible to find the bullet in this case, but after treatment of the wound and injecting a dosage of antibiotics, this rhino would make it!
This time it all ended with the rhino getting back in to the bush – as the situation for the rhinos have deteriorated over the last decades – that is not always the outcome!
- We were all happy to run for our safe haven when this disorientated rhino woke up!
