Buy video

Looking out into the water I had noticed a small school of Parrotfish. I wantch as one swam up to a large rock. It then began to clean the rock and eat the algae that had formed. All the while schools of minnows and Mangrove snapper swam up to and all around the colorful Parrotfish.

Parrotfish are important to ecosystem. They eat harmful algae off of the coral and excrete sand. It is estimated that up to 70% of the sand on white sand beaches have been deposited by Parrotfish. A single large, adult Parrotfish can deposit over one ton of sand each year.
