Also known as the Swallow-tailed Manakin, the Blue Manakin exhibits strong sexual dimorphism. While the males are blue with black head, wings and outer tail feathers, and a red crown, the females are olive-green. Immature males look like females, until they get the red crown, and the body feathers gradually change into bright blue plumage of the adult. If you look closely, you can see that this young male still has some remaining olive-green feathers.

A very distinguishing feature of this species, found in both males and females, is the longer central tail feathers, giving it a very unique look.
