Violence erupted across Venezuela during nationwide protests against President Nicolas Maduro, with protesters throwing projectiles and setting upturned cars alight.

Footage captured yesterday (January 23) shows demonstrators, some in hooded tops and some with scarves around their faces, blocking a road in central Caracas as smoke from an upturned car on fire billows in the air.

Another protester is seen draped in the national flag.

Some demonstrators hurl projectiles in the direction of security forces.

Crowds can be seen gathering at Nueva Granada avenue in the capital later on in the clip.

Opposition leader Juan Guaido has declared himself the nation’s interim president, with the backing of the United States, Canada, Argentina and other countries around the world.

In the meantime, the United Nations has called for dialogue to stop the escalation of violence in the country.
