Residents of New Zealand's capital Wellington stopped in the middle of a parking lot to observe two minutes of silence in memory of those who died and were injured in last week's terrorist attacks in Christchurch.

The filmer wrote: "The workers take the time to honour the dead and share their grief with two minutes of silence and a Waiata (song) Te Aroha (Love)".

We can hear the people singing in the video.

The Islamic call to prayer and the two minutes of silence were broadcast on national television.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern joined thousands of mourners near the Al-Noor mosque, one of two places of worship targeted in last Friday's shootings.

Fifty people were killed and dozens more wounded in the attacks.

Australian Brenton Tarrant, a self-proclaimed white supremacist, has been charged with one murder and is expected to face further charges.
