Love in the sea – a pair of Falklands Steamer Ducks mating then ‘steaming’ across the water

The Falklands Steamer Duck (Tachyeres brachypterus) locally known as the “Logger” is a goose-sized, flightless carnivorous marine duck endemic to the Falkland Islands. Falklands Steamer Ducks are found on rocky shorelines, where they dive for molluscs such as mussels and limpets, and less frequently crustaceans. When agitated, Steamer Ducks ‘steam’ – thrashing their stubby wings on the water – reminiscent of old-time paddle steamers. This pair was mating in the sea off Bleaker Island, south-east of East Falkland. After being released, the female surfaced and swam with the male (the duck with the orange bill) and both birds began ‘steaming’ across the sea surface.
