A festival in northern India showed off a gruesome set of practices as Hindu devotees pierced their bodies with hooks and walked on hot coals.

The event happened on April 13 in Bund District, Jharkhand state, as the district celebrated "Bundu", with many people fasting and offering prayers to the Hindu deities Shiva and Parvati.

The devotees and priests walk over burning coals and insert iron rods into their bodies, believing they can experience no physical harm of anybody after fasting for five consecutive days. Some are even seen attaching balloons reading "Love" to the hooks and marching in a central procession.

One of the hooked worshippers can be seen ascending a tower and attaching himself to a crane, and being raised over a crowd, throwing flowers to the people below, who rush to grab them as they are said to bring good luck.
