When the poo hits the fan – a male Hippo marks his territory by flicking dung

The Common Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) is the third largest land mammal after the African Elephant and the Square-lipped (or White) Rhinoceros. Hippos are semi-aquatic, spending most of the day in water and emerging to graze on grasses at dusk. Dominant bull Hippos mark their territory by scattering their dung with rapid sideways flicking of the tail. This male backed up to the river bank at the Nthandanyathi Hide on the S28 Road in Kruger National Park, and let fly a large quantity of semi-liquid dung, decorating the surrounds with it.
