This video shows the moment Britain's only poisonous species of snake was spotted slithering along a beach - just metres away from children and dogs.

Lesley Allen, 68, captured the footage of the adder while out for a walk with her husband, and shared it to raise awareness of the potential dangers.

Although native to the UK, adders are venomous and can be dangerous to children and animals.

Lesley, a retired receptionist, said she was told that the snake could have fallen from a nearby cliff before she saw it on the beach at Mawgan Porth, near Newquay, Cornwall.

She said: “Lifeguards said it may have fallen off the cliff.
