Rescue officials continue to search for survivors in the aftermath of a building collapse in western India.

The incident took place in the Dongri area of southern Mumbai earlier today (July 16).

Footage shows officials carrying out rescue operations at the scene of the collapse.

At least seven people have been killed and more than 30 are still trapped, officials say.

The cause of the collapse is not clear.

A devastating visual has emerged of rescue officials trying to remove the concrete debris after a four-storey building came crashing down in western India.

The incident took place on July 16 around 11 am at Dongri city in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Authorities said that at least 40 people are feared trapped under the debris of the collapsed building.

A team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has rushed to the site and are carrying out rescue operations.

The building was part of a cluster of houses located near the Abdul Hamid Dargah on the Mohammed Ali Road in Dongri.

Videos of the rescue operation show NDRF personnel, trying to remove concrete blocks, as they probe the openings amid the debris for signs of life.

An aerial shot of the spot showed that the collapsed four-storey building was situated in a congested, crowded neighbourhood with structures on all four sides.

The collapse has been characterised a Level 2 incident, which requires the services of a state or regional response team or other state or federal assistance. This level can pose an immediate and long-term risk to the environment and public health.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority, a state government body, that undertakes the construction of residential buildings under various housing schemes for different sections of the society.

Officials said that the area, full of dilapidated buildings on narrow lanes, was flooded in heavy rain in the past weeks.
