More than 150 female students at a residential school were allegedly forced to get a haircut by the principal in order to 'save water' in southern India.

The incident took place on August 9 at Tribal Girls Gurukul School in Telangana state's Medak town of the same district.

Images of the scene show one mother of a student venting her anger at the school administration for having cut her child's hair without informing her.

The incident came to light on August 13, when parents visited the residential school only to find their daughters with short hair.

According to reports, School Principal K Aruna had allegedly called two barbers in and then forced the girls to pay 25 rupees each for the cut.

Parents have complained and staged protests.

The shocking incident took place on Aug. 09 at Tribal Girls Gurukul School in Telangana state's Medak town of the same district.

Two girls, who were victims of this rather 'atrocious' act can be seen standing in the background, with one of them displaying her chopped hair.

The incident came to light on Aug. 13 when parents of the students visited the residential school only to find their daughters with short hair.

According to reports, School Principal K Aruna had allegedly called two barbers to the hostel after which she forced the girl students to pay Rs 25 each (0.35 USD).

The parents then staged a protest against the government-run institution and school principle K Aruna for forcing their kids to get a haircut citing water shortage required for hair wash.

The school principal, however, said the decision was taken after the school discovered that many girls were suffering from lice infestation and other dermatological diseases. She added haircuts were given for better hygiene of the girl students.

The principal also claimed that the consent of students was taken into consideration before making the decision while adding that water shortage was also one of the reasons.

Meanwhile, the district administration and welfare department have initiated an inquiry against the principle of Tribal Girls Gurukul School.
