Australian teacher shows off reaction of sodium with water
Sodium metal is placed in a large beaker of water. Instantly the water and sodium react forming hydrogen gas and sodium hydroxide. The phenolphthalein indicator shows the water turning alkaline. The rapid generation of hydrogen causes a small explosion. Heat from the reaction also ignites the hydrogen gas! It is actually a two stage reaction
