Japan was today (October 11) braced for powerful super typhoon Hagibis which is heading towards the main island region.

The super typhoon is expected to make landfall on October 12 in Tokyo but already in the coastal town of Tateyama in Chiba prefecture, choppy seas and strong winds were being felt.

While in Higashimuro-gun in Wakayama prefecture, waves were seen battering rocks and a bridge near the ocean.

Forecasters warn that the typhoon could match and even be more powerful than a 1958 typhoon that left 1,269 dead in Japan.

Hagibis, which means 'velocity' or 'swiftness' in the Filipino language, is predicted to have the same force as a category five hurricane.

Flights departing and arriving from the country's two main airports, Tokyo Haneda and Tokyo Narita, have been canceled. The cancellations affect some 1187 flights and 190,000 passengers.
