A primary school teacher and her sister were tied and beaten by village inhabitants and local political party representatives for protesting against forcibly acquired land by the government.

The incident took place on February 2 in the village of Gangrampur, South Dinajpur district, West Bengal.

Footage shot on the scene shows teacher Smriti Kana Das and her sister Soma Das blocking the path of a steam-roller by sitting in the middle of the road.

The local villagers, along with party representatives from the All India Trinamool Congress Party (TMC), are seen tying the women up with a rope and dragging them to the side of the road, while slapping and beating them.

Reportedly the women have registered a case against five men who allegedly assaulted them, including TMC district leader Amal Sarkar.

The matter is being investigated by law enforcement and the local TMC have dismissed Sarkar in response to this scandal.
