The 62-inch shell, weighing almost 2,800 pounds, was set over Howelsen Hill in Steamboat Springs. Steamboat resident Tim Borden's attempt to make the Guinness World Records last year ended in disappointment when the shell exploded without leaving the ground. An approaching storm nearly scuttled this year's attempt, but held off long enough for the record-setting pyrotechnic, sending spectators into jubilation. Video by Nina Shelanski.
