A factory worker's foot was mangled after he tried to kick a block of ice that was stuck in a grinding machine.

The labourer, 18, was putting the metre-long pieces of frozen water into a crusher to be made into ice cubes.

But when one block was stuck, he tried to kick it through. The young man, named Aye Thaw, then slipped into the industrial equipment in Samut Prakan, Thailand, last Thursday.

Aye howled in pain and his colleagues rushed over to turn off the equipment but his foot was jammed.

Rescue workers arrived with a hydraulic spreader and spent half an hour pulling out the boy, whose foot was broken by the grinder.

One of his co-workers, Kaung, said he was careless to use his feet with the machine and it finally led him into danger.

He said: "It was neglect and dangerous to use feet in the ice machine. He should not use his feet but still he did it and it cost him his feet."

Police said they would check that the factory owner had the correct paperwork for employing the Burmese migrant workers.

However, Police Colonel Sophon Mongkolsophonrat said the young employee accepted the accident was his mistake for using his feet in the machine.
