Incredible Leap Day Aurora Borealis in Coldfoot Alaska

Buy video

This is a real-time video of an extremely powerful leap day aurora, filmed on February 29th. The sun is currently at the low end of its natural eleven year cycle, solar minimum. This means that there are little to no sun spots and solar activity is low which in turn means less spectacular auroras. This night however we saw an incredible display, one of the best I've seen in the past year. It kept going for hours, all night long. Sadly, with temperatures below -35 Celsius / -31 F, my camera batteries died long before it was over.
