Cow racing, known locally as "pacu jawi,” is a thrilling tradition that has been around for hundreds of years in Indonesia and celebrates the end of the rice harvest season.

Footage from the Newsflare archive filmed in Payakumbuh in April 2016 shows competitors getting dragged through a muddy paddy field as they cling onto a charging female cow.

The action-packed race uses a knockout system to find the winner and prizes typically include motorbikes, money and gold coins.

Payakumbuh people are fans of cow racing. almost every month there is always a race.
they use female cows. female cows are considered to have the skills and stamina better than bulls.
    race length 70 m- 90 m. the place where the competition is the fields to be planted. there are many competitions held during the rainy season. one run only lasts 10 seconds or less.
the jockey runs with the cow. a jockey must be able to run fast on muddy tracks. need special strength and skill for that. no wonder in this competition there was also a competition for children running in mud. they will later become jockeys too.
    race prizes are usually motorbikes, money, and gold coins. each participant must register with an amount of money. only IDR 30 000 / cow. This cow race uses the knockout system. but may come again by registering again. so this cow race is only finished after one year.
