Massive male orangutan hangs around in trees, then thrills tourists by clambering past them.

For my 7th #brightenyourday video, we are heading to #Indonesia.

An orangutan clambering through the canopy is like a shaggy red cog moving through the ecosystem of the forest. With feet able to grip like hands, and any-which-way hip joints, they travel through the trees and seldom come down to the ground - especially in Sumatra where they share their habitat with Sumatran tigers. Orangutans eat fruit, and as they travel, they transport seeds in their gut which are deposited miles from the parent plant in dung - first class fertiliser - thereby growing the trees of tomorrow.

This adult male is near the feeding station at #BukitLawang in #GunungLeuser National Park, where rescued #orangutans have long been rehabilitated back to the wild. He has little need of the food on offer, but calls by to check out any females who might be around, giving tourists a wonderful photo-opportunity from a safe distance. As of March 2020, all ape viewing sites have closed to prevent the #Covid19 pandemic reaching these critically endangered primates, who share so much DNA with us they are susceptible to our diseases.
