Following a marathon operation, forest officials rescued a wild elephant from a 15-foot-deep (4.5 metres) trench in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

The incident took place at Gandhinagar of Chittoor district on April 9.

According to sources, the wild tusker emerged from the forest and fell into the ditch.

A farmer spotted the stranded animal and alerted the forest department officials. A rescue team was rushed to the spot.

The video shows the rescue officials using an excavator to create a track for the animal.

Some can also be seen encouraging the tusker as it attempts to climb out of the ditch.

Following this, the tusker climbs out of the ditch using the dirt ramp.

The animal was greeted with a loud cheer once it had successfully gotten out of the pit.
