Gulls divide opinion! Beautiful to look at and elegant when soaring on an up-draft, but quite intimidating when they dive-bomb and try to steal food from the unwary holiday-maker enjoying fish and chips on the beach.
This handsome lesser black-backed gull - perfect in every feather - seems at first glance to be sitting calmly. But notice how his eyes are constantly alert for either danger or opportunity, and his look is so expressive - though whether the meaning is the same in gulls and humans is open to question. Even with binoculars, it is not often one gets to see the muscles around the eyes of a wild bird move, but this one roosts on the walls and roofs of Le Mont St Michel on the coast of Normandy, France, and is apparently used to harmless humans. He provides the 55th #BrightenYourDay video to connect you to #nature during the #Covid19 #lockdown.
