SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE NORTHWEST OF IRELAND THIS MORNING

What a morning it was across the northwest of Ireland this morning with Multicellular thunderstorms with frequent lightning, flash flooding, hail and gusty winds. I hit the road just after 12am before any cells where showing on radar with a gut feeling that it was going to be a long few hours I only returned back home at around 9:30am.

I set of for Mullaghmore, Co.Sligo and met up with friend and fellow storm chaser Noel Keating where we first captured the moon set over Donegal Bay. We then checked the radar and notice that storms where moving up the east of Ireland moving and shifting slightly north to northwestwards so we set of and ended up watching the storms across Cavan and Fermanagh from outside Belleek overlooking Lough Erne for a time. Again we checked the radar and notice storms developing across Connacht and quickly made our way back to south Donegal between Bundoran and Tullaghan on the by pass with a nice open view to the south just as we arrived multi cell storms where lighting the sky up every few seconds which was a beautiful sight, Gardai on patrol also pulled up for a time to watch it with us. I then took the decision to keep going and headed for Mullaghmore as there where a number of cells heading in that general direction and over Sligo town just as I though would happen reviewing the forecast before setting of earlier that morning.

When I got to Mullaghmore around 5am a Thunderstorm over Sligo town and Grange passed right in front of me over Donegal bay in the Direction of Slieve League, Donegal with frequent lightning and cracks of thunder, once that moved of I then went around to the south side of Mullaghmore overlooking the harbor with another with another cell heading in my direction crossing over the mountains in Leitrim and south Donegal.
I then headed back around the sea road of Mullaghmore overlooking the Castle towards Sligo town direction and watched another thunderstorm approach. There was again non stop lightning and loud cracks of thunder overhead before a intense downpour hit with large hail hopping of the car. It was not safe to be out and I remained in the car as lightning was dancing down around me with very loud cracks of thunder overhead. As the cell moved northwards across Donegal bay i observed some rotation with a possible funnel trying to form over the water.

A number of areas in Sligo town this morning seen a lot of flooding with Sligo Fire Service and Sligo County Council kept busy pumping water to try and clear up the floods
