At the end of February to the beginning of August each year, hundreds of sea turtles come to lay their eggs in the coastal area of Malaumkarta and Um Island, Makbon District, Sorong Regency, West Papua.

During this period, especially at night, turtles are seen coming to shore, digging holes to place their eggs, and then returning to the sea.

Local people then move the eggs to captivity, to avoid the threat of predatory animals, even ignorant human hands.

Turtle eggs that have hatched into chicks or so-called hatchlings, are then released back into the sea.

Through the malaumkarta raya conservation group that has been formed since 2018, efforts to protect sea turtles by the community are carried out to ensure the survival of these protected and endangered animals.

Not only that, efforts to protect and conserve nature, are also carried out with customary law, or in the language of Moi, the indigenous tribe who inhabit the area of the Greater Malang, called Egek.

Even with all the limitations in terms of knowledge, facilities, and finance, the malaumkarta raya conservation group tried to remain consistent in carrying out efforts to conserve the surrounding nature and its habitat.
