Nile Crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) are the second largest species of crocodile and reptile in the world. Adult males average between 3.5 and 5 metres (11.5 to 16.4 feet) long, and weigh between 225 to 750 kilograms (500 to 1,650 pounds). Nile Crocodiles are the top (apex) predators in freshwater habitats in Africa and are common in Kruger National Park. They are responsible for hundreds of human deaths per year. This large male Nile Crocodile shared the pool behind the Tsendze River Causeway with hippos, numerous waterbirds and Nile Monitors. We found him basking on the concrete causeway early one morning, blocking traffic in both directions, under a South African National Parks vehicle drove him back into the water.
