A farmer in central India's Madhya Pradesh has built a battery-operated car from scratch amid the coronavirus lockdown.

The footage was filmed in Gadarwara, Narsinghpur district, on September 30.

According to reports, besides farming, Jeevan Lal also repairs electronic items in his village.

He was stranded amid the lockdown where the economy came crashing down across the country.

Lal was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech on India being self-reliant and decided to build the car.

Lal who left school after the eighth standard got the idea of building a car after spotting a scooter.

He then collected scraps, materials and built the car with the help of a battery.

His car runs on eight batteries and can run 50-60 kilometres (31-37 miles) at one charge.

The video shows the white car running on the road fitted with wheels of a scooter.

He spent at least Rs 40,000-50,000 ($542-678) in making the vehicle.

Lal is hopeful that he can modify the vehicle to make it even better.
