This is the dramatic moment Super Typhoon Goni tore a roof from a school as terrified families sheltered inside the building.

Terrified locals fled their homes and crowded into the classroom which was being used as an evacuation centre as the storm ripped through their village in Camarines Sur province, the Philippines, this morning.

Footage shows the large metal roof being blown away from the building and flung through the air before landing in a field. Nobody was hurt from the debris and they were moved into another part of the school as the storm passed.

The filmer, Rica, said: ''This is the strongest storm we've ever had. I could feel it shaking my body. I am praying that everyone is safe.''

Rica was sheltering in a different building inside the school. She said that families had fled their frail, wooden homes to take refuge in the stronger school, which was being used as an evacuation centre.

She added: ''People were sheltering in the classroom when the roof came off but they were not hurt. Nobody was injured.''

Typhoon Goni smashed into the country shortly after sunrise bringing strong winds, heavy rain and leaving severe flooding in Albay and Camarines Sur provinces.

The storm, also known locally as Typhoon Rolly, exploded into the strongest typhoon of the year. Its winds increased from 100 mph to 180 mph between Thursday and Friday night as it hurtled across the Western Pacific Sea.

It made landfall in the country on Sunday morning. Forecasters said it has the same force as a category 5 hurricane.

More than one million residents - around 1,000 of them with Covid-19 - have been evacuated from their homes into temporary evacuation centres. There were concerns that evacuations could further spread the virus.

Weather and disaster officials said Typhoon Goni is among the strongest typhoons to hit the Philippines since Haiyan, which killed more than 6,300 people in 2013.

Senator Christopher Go, an aide of President Rodrigo Duterte, said: "We are having a hard time with Covid-19, and then here comes another disaster.''

A second typhoon, Atsani, was trailing behind Goni and gaining strength with winds of around 35 mph.
