A number of residents in the shadow of Mount Ili Lewotolok have ignored evacuation orders deciding to protect their livestock.

Footage filmed by volunteer Diego Alif Sarariti on November 30 shows numerous residents attending to their animals in Central Lewoleba in the province of East Nusa Tenggara.

Mount Ile Lewotolok erupted on Monday sending large dust clouds into the sky nearly 3,000 metres above sea level.

The eruption prompted 2,780 people from 26 villages to flee and a four-kilometre radius has been set up around the volcano, but some have decided to stay.

Indonesia's Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Centre said “hot clouds, lava stream, lava avalanche, and poisonous gas” would be a result of the eruption.

Monitoring on Mount Ile Lewotolok Monday (30/11) at 08.33 WITA. An eruption occurred with an observed ash column height of + - 1400 meters above the peak (+ - 2,823 m above sea level). The ash column is observed to be gray with a thick intensity leaning towards the west. This eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 15 mm and a duration of + - 1 minute 50 seconds. G. Ile Lewotolok currently has Level III (SIAGA) status. The community is advised not to carry out any activities within a 4 km radius from the activity center of G. Ile Lewotolok.
