A woman from Bedford in the UK was appalled recently to discover an earwig in her McDonald's sandwich.

Josie O'Connell was enjoying her Bacon Chicken Mayo at the restaurant on Goldington Rd on December 9 but when she opened it to reposition the bacon, she spotted something black.

"I thought it was a piece of dodgy lettuce at first," the trainee teacher said.

"But then I looked closer. It was a bug!" she added.

"I immediately felt sick. I videoed it and rushed back into the restaurant. I told them and showed them the bug. All they could say was ‘we’re very sorry, this has never happened before. Do you want a new one?’ I said no as I felt sick. They then gave me a refund of £1.39! They didn’t refund me for the drink or fries!" O'Connell said.

"I went home and showed my friend the video and she told me it was an earwig. I also realised there was only half a bug in my burger. I must have eaten the other half!" she concluded.

McDonald's contacted O'Connell over Twitter and said they "were sorry to hear" about the incident.

A McDonald's spokesperson told Newsflare: “We are sorry to hear about this customer’s experience. Food safety is of the utmost importance to us and we place great emphasis on quality control, following rigorous standards to avoid any imperfections. The customer returned the item to our restaurant team where they were given a full refund and were offered a replacement. Our customer services team has contacted the customer in order to find a satisfactory solution.”
