The Hong Kong government had mulled cancelling, and did indeed cancel the traditional Chinese New Year flower market held every year in Victoria park. However, after an u-turn, it decided to keep the flower market open, but to accompany it with stringent crowd control measures to avoid a COVID-19 pandemic resurgence. On 6 February 2021, on the first day of its opening, the market attracted a subdued crowd, many people avoiding gatherings because of an ongoing wave IV of the coronavirus epidemic. The market's crowd control software also hit a snag, having to be rebooted manually and leading to some queues building up on the Causeway Bay entrance.

Earlier today, a pro-democracy organization saw its stall lease cancelled for displaying "political" slogans, referring to June 4, 1989, i.e., the Tienanmen massacre.
