Environmental protesters scale tree scheduled to be chopped in London

Two Extinction Rebellion protesters scaled a century-old Black Poplar tree in southwest London today in a bid to stop property developers from felling it in order to build an electricity substation on February 22.

The tree stands in York Gardens next to the Winstanley Estate, a 1960s housing development, which is undergoing regeneration with 185 mature trees at risk.

Environmental groups accuse the developers of "greenwashing" and the sub-station could be constructed around the trees.

Wandsworth Council have issued an eviction order demanding protesters leave by today.
