A five-feet-long male cobra got trapped by a garden net at a village near Puri in eastern India on March 6.

A Snake Helpline volunteer, Susant Kumar Behera, who went to rescue the trapped snake witnessed an unusual sight.

He saw a four-feet-long female cobra approaching the trapped snake and poking its head against the male’s body. The female went on to seduce the male and started mating with it.

Snake Helpline founder Subhendu Mallik directed Susant to wait for at least 30 minutes and let the snakes finish their business.

Susant first rescued the free female put it in a bag. He then freed the trapped male and cut the strings that were still attached to its head. Both the snakes were released at a nearby natural habitat at the same time to facilitate their future mating.

Subhendu Mallik said "It is stunning that the male could overcome its stress of entrapment and copulate with the female cobra. Animal behavior is like an ocean and what we know is enough to fill just a glass.”
