Council remove bridge to save swans in Kent, UK

A wooden bridge spanning over Sheerness canal broke a few years ago, which Swale Council replaced with a temporary floating bridge.

Unfortunately, because swans could no longer swim under the floating bridge, they were forced onto land more often and all of their cygnets from last year ended up being killed by predators including dogs.

Swale Council has decided to remove the temporary structure today (April 6) because of this.

A new bridge design rising over the water - allowing the swans to swim under it - is still waiting on approval from Historic England because the man made wartime canal known as the 'Queenborough Lines' is a Scheduled Monument.

The bridge gives easy access to Barton's Point Coastal Park and forms part of a national cycle route - for the meantime pedestrians and cyclists will now have to take a longer route to the park.
