English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson attended a pro-Israel demonstration in London on Sunday afternoon (May 23).

Wrapped in an Israeli flag and holding a "Free Gaza from Hamas" sign, Robinson said: "Why am I here today? To show solidarity with Jewish people. And I believe Israel has the right to defend themselves against a terrorist organisation who attack them continually every day.

Some pro-Palestine supporters took part in a counter demonstration, which took place near the Israeli embassy in Kensington, London. This followed a large pro-Palestine rally that took place yesterday in London in which placards referring to Hitler and the Holocaust were seen.

"I can only think how terrified many Jewish people must be at the minute in this country," Robinson said. "I’ve just come to say to the English people, the true English people to say stand with them, stand with their right to defend themselves."

Robinson was criticised by Jewish leaders for attending the demonstration.

On Twitter, the the Board of Deputies of British Jews wrote: "Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (aka Tommy Robinson) & supporters of of far-right extremist organisations like the English Defence League are not welcome at our community’s events. Their message of hate and division must be confronted and defeated. We utterly reject their bigotry."

An 11-day military conflict between Israel and Hamas militants ended in a ceasefire on Friday.
