A firm is currently building the UK's first ever fully electric fishing boat.

Plymouth Boat Trips is working on transforming a diesel trawler into a green and sustainable one as part of a project to prove electric vessels are commercially viable.

The ambitious reconstruction comes just a year after the company unveiled its prototype - e-Voyager - hailed as Britain's first electric ferry.

Bosses said the trial - conducted in 'real-world conditions' - had been such a success, they are now converting all their boats into being fully electric.

The latest one to be given the green makeover at the company in Plymouth, Devon, is a crab potting boat.

Co-owner Ben Squire said: "We've done our proof of concept boat, the e-Voyager, and we're happy.

"So now we're going to progress over time to converting all of our boats.

"And we're now going to be looking to be the UK's first at converting a diesel powered commercial fishing boat, a crab potting boat, to fully electric.

"I was quite sceptical to be honest because I've been around working boats for years and years whether this electric conversion would stand up to the rigours of the hardcore commercial operation. But it has and that's what makes me really happy. The fact it works in the commercial environment."

The electric boats are made in the south west by local engineers, as part of a joint project involving Plymouth University and EV parts of Ilfracombe who supply the propulsion and the batteries.
