Residents were washed away by flash floods as the heaviest rainstorm on record hit central China.

The video, filmed in the city of Zhengzhou in Henan Province on July 20, shows a group of residents holding their hands together and struggling to move in the rapid floodwater.

However, two people were separated from the group and fell into the floodwater.

Vehicles were trapped in the deep floodwater and motorists struggled to save themselves.

According to reports, 100,000 people have been evacuated and 12 people were killed.

7月21日3时，河南省防指决定将防汛应急响应级别由Ⅱ级提升为Ⅰ级 。截至2021年7月21日7时，已转移避险约10万人，洪灾已造成郑州市区12人死亡（均为地铁5号线列车内被困人员）。
从多名市民20日下午记录的现场视频看，街道被洪水冲击，市民手挽手在洪水中艰难行走，更多名市民被洪水冲走或者围困。汽车被淹没纷纷抛锚，有司机在洪水中挣扎求生。
暴雨还造成多个医院停电、学校成“孤岛”、市内交通瘫痪。
郑州常年平均全年降雨量为640.8mm，相当于这三天下了以往一年的量。从气候学的角度来看，小时降水、日降水的概率，重现期通过分布曲线拟合来看，都是超千年一遇的。
