Thirty-six revellers arrested for ‘drinking at bar after 9pm curfew’ in Thailand
Dozens of revellers were arrested after allegedly drinking at a bar breaking a Covid-19 curfew in Thailand.
Thirty-six youngsters – including Thais and foreigners – were found inside the sports bar in Chiang Mai province on Monday night (July 19).
Cops raided the venue just after 10 pm – more than an hour past the 9 pm closing time ordered by the government to stop the spread of Covid-19.
Officers frogmarched them away from the bar, called Renegade Cafe, to waiting trucks before they were driven to the station. The owner was charged with illegally serving alcohol and the customers were charged with drinking after the curfew.
There were Brits, Australians, Americans and Europeans among those who were arrested.
Police said those at the bar were ‘disobeying Chiang Mai Communicable Disease Committee Order No. 70/2564, prohibiting anyone from consuming alcoholic beverages in restaurants or beverages and the area continuously from 21.00 hrs onwards’.
A police spokesman said: ‘Officers arrived at 10pm and caught 36 people drinking at the bar in violation of the emergency decree and curfew. They were all arrested and will be punished.
‘The shop had camouflaged itself by closing the doors and turning down the lights while customers were still inside drinking alcohol and eating food. The customers were still having fun without fear of contracting the Covi-19 virus that is currently spreading heavily.’
