Drone footage captures moment mother whale and its calf swim together in South Africa

A drone photographer captures the moment a playful mother whale and its calf interact with each other in South Africa.

The two marine mammals are seen swimming together on the surface.

Southern right whales and their babies travel together for a year, all along the Whale Route of South Africa. Mothers nurse their calves during this time, and if they feel playful, they may breach together near the coastline.

This breathtaking ability is made possible by the whale's powerful tail fin, the fluke, that the mother uses to propel herself upwards as she somersaults and catapults at the water's surface.

The Whale Route extends from the south of Cape Town, all the way to Durban. More than 37 species of whales, dolphins, African penguins, and Cape fur seals populate this region.
