Mother whale and calf swimming & playing off the South African coast. Did you know that a southern right mother and her baby travel together for a year, all along the Whale Route of South Africa? The mother will nurse her calf during this time, and if they feel playful, they may breach together near the coastline.

This breathtaking ability is made possible by a wale's powerful tail fin (the fluke) which the whale mother uses to propel herself upwards as she somersaults and catapults at the water's surface.

The Whale Route extends from the south of Cape Town, all the way to Durban (situated on the East Coast), which is a total of 1200 miles of whale-watching coastline. This region is populated by a more than 37 different species of whale and dolphin, as well as African penguins, Cape fur seals and loads of other marine life.
