These pictures show Plymouth lighting up for the national firework championships in memory of the city's shooting victims.

The British Fireworks Championships started with a minute's silence before five simple red heart-shaped fireworks were set off - one for each of those shot dead by gunman Jake Davison last Thursday.

The hearts were a tribute to Maxine Davison, 51, Stephen Washington, 59, Kate Shepherd, 66, Lee Martyn, 43, and his daughter Sophie Martyn, three.

Those behind the event said the decision to go ahead after last week's tragedy came after talks with the council and residents.

Plymouth City Council leader Nick Kelly said the authority, organisers and officials had "thought long and hard" about the decision.

He said: "After listening to many people's views, we've decided to dedicate these two nights to the victims.

"It is an event that brings joys to thousands and it brings Plymouth together".

Organiser of the event Jim Winship added: "The consensus is that the event should go ahead after consultation with the council and people in the city.

"People come from all over the country and they'll see we're back".
