A driver recorded the terrifying moment lightning hit an electric pole during a storm in Thailand.

Dashcam footage shows bright lightning striking the power line during a heavy rain downpour as vehicles moved along the highway in Trat province on September 28 evening.

The lightning brought bright sparks and loud explosions in the area before slowing the traffic down when shocked motorists stopped after the incident.

Motorist Thirawat Muangchang said he was driving home when there was a sudden explosion due which was recorded by his camera.

He said: ‘I was terrified as it was so bright and loud. The lightning could have killed me and other people in the area. I am relieved everyone was safe.’

No one was reported hurt nor damaged by the explosion while the local electric company was informed by the incident.

Repairs were done the next day when the weather condition improved causing power interruption in the area.

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November. Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods.
