This is the terrifying moment a fast-flowing river swept away a wooden riverside house after heavy rain in the Philippines.

Resident Meriel Villafuerte filmed locals screaming as the swollen river eroded the ground beneath the house which was washed away by the muddy torrent in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte province on October 20.

Meriel’s husband Kent said the house was the third to be claimed by the river after continuous rainstorms battered the province this month.

He said: ‘I’m really scared and worried that our house will be affected because we also live near the river. Most of the roads are impassable, and until now the rescuers are having a hard time reaching us.

‘My children are still very young. My eldest is five years old and my youngest is eight-month-old so hopefully someone can help us evacuate and reach higher ground.’

The Philippines and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November. Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods.
