Thousands of people gathered in Athens to mark the 48th anniversary of the 1973 Athens Polytechnic Uprising, on 17 November.

Athens' Polytechnic students carried a blood-stained Greek flag to the US Embassy during the demonstration.

The '73 uprising began as a student demonstration against the military junta that ruled Greece at the time, and ended in bloodshed on 17 November 1973, when the junta crushed what had become open revolt.

Many of the students involved in the uprising opposed NATO and the US government was supportive of the junta.
